Chapter Fourteen

Omen

I go back the same way Yuri brought me before and just like before there is nothing around but the broken down buildings. I see a few children but no adults. Were these all the kids that Yuri was taking care of? What happened to them when he wasn't here? How were they even living? I push the troubling thoughts out of my mind and walk towards the small house where I know Lilian is. I keep low making sure not to draw too much attention. With it being so early in the morning, I don't think there is anyone to catch me but I can't be sure. I look through the window the same as I did before and I see her curled up on the small bed, but this time she looks like she's resting peacefully. I can't see into the main area of the house so I do my best to jimmy the window open and slip through. Luckily for me the window is away from the main walkway.

I hop in quietly, there isn't much room for me to move around in the small space but I get as close to her as I can without waking her.

She looks exactly like I remember. She's beautiful. She sighs prettily as she sleeps and her long lashes fan out across the apples of her cheeks. How the fuck did I let her go?

I kneel on the bed as softly as I can and press a hand over her mouth. I don't want her to scream when she sees me.

The second my hand makes contact with her mouth she does just that. Thankfully my hand is there to muffle the sound.

"Shh, Lilian it's me. Shh." I try my best to calm her down and after a second the tension in her body goes slack. "I'm going to let go, okay," I tell her, making sure that she's awake and aware of what's going on. She nods.

I raise up off the bed and she quickly shuffles up to her knees. "What the hell are you doing here? Are you crazy? If Josue finds you here, he'll kill the both of us. You have to go," she hisses out.

"Is there someone else in the house?" I ask her keeping my voice just as low as hers.

She turns her head to the door and stares for a second, "I don't think so. Let me check." She pushes me behind the door and opens it up. I watch her through the small crack just to make sure that she's okay. She walks around the house slowly, being that everything besides the room is one big open space there isn't much for her to check. She looks out the front window before she hurries back to me.

"No, there's no one here but that doesn't mean that they won't come." She sighs and grabs the ends of her hair and starts to pull and roll it around her fingers. Her nervous tick. I can't help but smile when she starts to do it.
